It's apparently hardwired in plot.mts:

    nc <- if (nser > 4) 2 else 1

So you need something that does wait and not use stdin.  On Windows I use
a dialog box, and I've never needed it on Linux.

There are books on S with *lots* of examples: see the FAQ.  Books even 
have indices.
