Does the aspect argument provide what you want?  For example, ...


# 10 rows 
x <- matrix(rnorm(100), ncol=10)
lp1 <- levelplot(x, colorkey=list(space="bottom"),

# 5 rows -- each row taller than in previous plot
x <- matrix(rnorm(50), ncol=5)
lp2 <- levelplot(x, colorkey=list(space="bottom"),
