R-beta: non-linear optimization in R

We were interested in doing non-linear optimization in R and have tried
the function nlm. The manual says that this function uses a Newton type
algorithm. We are interested in more information about this specific
algorithm and if alternatives (e.g., quasi-Newton) exist in R? Thanks
in advance.
