If you want to stick to open source tools, either MySQL or PostgreSQL
should do fine. Both run on all relevant platforms and should be fast
enough for most tasks. PostgreSQL is the more feature rich one, while
MySQL might be a bit faster in some cases.
Other databases might be ok too, but they are not used as wide-spread as
those two.
