plot(1,1, xlab=expression( 0 *"<"* beta  *"<"* 1  ) )

I originally tried:

plot(1,1, xlab=expression( 0 < beta  < 1  ) )

.... But it throws an error because the is not a syntactically correct R expression, so I switched to using text versions of the symbols.
