Sys.sleep() if exact timing is not too critical. Otherwise, using the tcltk packages, you can interface to the "after" Tcl command. The generic pattern is
boo <- function() {if (running) tcl("after", 500, boo) ; cat("boo!\n")}
running <- TRUE; boo()
