"beautiful graphs" and "Excel" really do not belong in the same sentence.

3d barplots and piecharts in Excel tend to present trivial amounts of
information, in a difficult-to-perceive-and-accurately-interpret way.
Why replicate subpar functionality already implemented in another
program?

I suggest reading:

•William S. Cleveland. (1993). Visualizing Data. Hobart Press.
ISBN-10: 0963488406 ISBN-13: 978-0963488404

and/or

•Edward R. Tufte. (2001). The Visual Display of Quantitative
Information (Second ed.). Graphics Press.
