[R] regexpr mystery can not remove trailing spaces

my first message had a typo, should have been with '\\s' rather than '\
\w'.

sub('\\s+$', '', bbb[1])

> [1] "02.06.10 12:40   "

this should be

sub('[[:space:]]+$', '', bbb[1])

that's why it stripped the ':' and not white space
