Try this. The first returns a Date class object and the second
returns a character string:

> d <- "March-2009"
> as.Date(as.yearmon(d, "%B-%Y"))
[1] "2009-03-01"
> format(as.Date(as.yearmon(d, "%B-%Y")))
[1] "2009-03-01"

See R News 4/1 for more on times and dates.

[1] "Jan" "Feb" "Mar" "Apr" "May" "Jun" "Jul" "Aug" "Sep" "Oct" "Nov" "Dec"

[1] "January" "February" "March" "April" "May" "June"
[7] "July" "August" "September" "October" "November" "December"
