Instead of ^o, use the word 'degree' (see ?plotmath)

  text(.8,.8, bquote(.(text)~.(obv)*degree) )

and, personally, I would let R handle the '=' sign:

  txt <- "Pop mean"
  text(1, 1.1, bquote(.(txt) == .(obv)*degree))
