obvious what I was talking about.  Thanks for replying!)

I don't think this this is a random test, since the error is reproducible
the same way every time.  The attached archive has some relevent files,
including config output and stats-Ex.Rout.fail .  The files were made using
a freshly unpacked tarball with md5 sum:

c6c1e866299f533617750889c729bfb3  R-2.11.0.tar.gz

The conclusion of stats-Ex.Rout.fail, before "make check" gives up, is:

Am happy to I would be happy to collect and send additional info.

The distribution is Slackware-13.0.  (32 bit).  There was no previous R
installation on the system.
