[R] chron - when seconds data not included

I have date and time data which looks like this:

 [1,] "7/1/08" "9:19" 
 [2,] "7/1/08" "9:58" 
 [3,] "7/7/08" "15:47"
 [4,] "7/8/08" "10:03"
 [5,] "7/8/08" "10:32"
 [6,] "7/8/08" "15:22"
 [7,] "7/8/08" "15:27"
 [8,] "7/8/08" "15:40"
 [9,] "7/9/08" "10:25"
[10,] "7/9/08" "10:27"

I would like to use chron on it, so that I can calculate intervals in time.

I can't seem to get chron to accept the time format that doesn't include
seconds.  Do I have to go through and append :00 on every line in order to
use chron?
