[R] Matrix entries not recognised as numeric

Use as.numeric:
> m <- matrix(c("1","2","3","4"),2,2)
> m
[,1] [,2]
[1,] "1" "3"
[2,] "2" "4"
> range(as.numeric(m[,1]))
[1] 1 2
