You can then do something like:

> DF
     MD
1  0.20
2  0.10
3  0.80
4  0.30
5  0.70
6  0.60
7  0.01
8  0.20
9  0.50
10 1.00
11 1.00


> cut(DF$MD, breaks = c(seq(0, 1, .2)), labels = LETTERS[1:5])
 [1] A A D B D C A A C E E
Levels: A B C D E
