Does this involve your own compiled code?
If so, run R under a debugger (e.g. R -d gdb) when you will get more
information. (You may also be able to get a core dump from option 1 and
look at that in a debugger, but what happens is OS-dependent, including
system settings in the OS.)
If not, it is likely to be a MacOS-specific problem, so please send a
reproducible example to the R-sig-mac list.
