IMHO you should try lattice
and play with the examples.......

xyplot(Murder ~ Population | state.region, data = states, 
       groups = as.character(state.name), 
       panel = function(x, y, subscripts, groups)  
       ltext(x=x, y=y, label=groups[subscripts], cex=.7, font=3))
