What version of R and dist is this? The version in the current R
(package mva) does not include that line, and it works:
> o <- matrix(c(1:3, rep(0,3), 3*(1:3)),3)
> o
[,1] [,2] [,3]
[1,] 1 0 3
[2,] 2 0 6
[3,] 3 0 9
> dist(o)
1 2
2 3.162278
3 6.324555 3.162278
Try
> conflicts("dist")
