[R] Interactive mode and pipes

When connecting R to a pipe (rather than a terminal), is
there any way to force it into 'interactive' mode?
Specifically, I wanted something to indicate that R is
waiting for another statement (the prompt?), and thus tell a
controlling application that output from the previous
evaluation has finished.

(A solution based on running a loop with eval(parse()) in it
might work instead, I guess).
