[R] installing version 1.4.1

It is read-only.  What version of `gtar' is this, and have you
already extracted in R-1.4.1 (yes in the case of your second attempt)?

I suspect an older version of GNU tar is in use.  I can't imagine this is a
common problem, or we would have met it before now.
