[R] trouble with plotting

EITHER

1) Buy a display that uses 24-bit colour, or set your Xserver to make use
of one if you have it.

OR

2) Shutdown all R graphics devices, then launch

X11(colortype="pseudo.cube")

and accept colour approximation to a 6x6x6 cube.
I don't find this a problem with lattice on an 8-bit display, bu ti also
rarely need it.
