[R] Re-shaping data

Hi there R experts!,
I am a newcomer to R and this is also the first time I have strayed outside
the ms windows environment.  I need some help with reshaping data imported
from excel as a *.csv file. Say I have a table of data in excel with 1 col
of x values and  3 cols of measurements for each subject. A total of 4 cols.
I tried to use the information in the import/export manual but am not able
to get a sensible output. Any guidance to a poor university student greatly
appreciated.
