We've more or less decided not to support the gcc 2.96 that never
should have shipped with RH7.0, so I'm afraid the workaround *is*
another compiler.
There are two options of which one might not work, and the other might
not work either (although it should have a better chance):
(1) Install gcc 2.95.2. This is known good compiler-wise (I run it on
RH 6.2), unless they also happened to break glibc... Compiling gcc
from source is not all that painful, and if you install into
/usr/local (the default) it is also fairly easy to get rid of at a
later stage.
(2) The rawhide distributions contain updated versions gcc 2.96, fixing
some of its bugs. That might be easier to install for you, but
nobody knows whether the bugs fixed are the relevant ones...
If any of this works, please let us know (and please try 'make
check'). We're anticipating a minor flood of queries re. this RedHat
unfortunateness.
BTW: Martyn's RPM for RH7.0 is compiled with gcc 2.95.2. There's an
off chance that installing that would allow the library to work if
built with the system compilers.
