I found the hershey fonts in my system and could display Japanese fonts
using the plotfont command.

Sorry, I was wrong. I am using R ver. 0.90.1 (1999, December).
Is it possible if this is the source of troubles? I will try
using R ver. 1.0.0 (from woody of Debian/GNU Linux package)
in near future.

Yes. The command "help(sum)" worked fine. But "help(Japanese)" returned
Error in help(Japanese) :
No documentation for Japanese.
"help(Hershey)" returned a similar error message.
