[R] usa() map

This comes up from time to time, but I usually answer privately.  This
message will at least get into the archives for future reference.

You don't say which platform or version of R you are using (it often
matters, and the platform does in this case).

There is a maps library for S, distributed with S-Plus.  I have ported
most of that to R.  It is available for Intel/Linux or SPARC from:
ftp://ftp.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/pub/statistics/map/ in files
maps_0.1-9_*.tar.gz.   These are R packages, which include map
databases for usa, world, china and nz (hence the 25MB size).
 
Note that thinning is not implemented, and projections have some
problems, you are welcome to try and sort them out.
