[R] Historical question

I realize this is not the right forum on which to pose this question, but
I thought someone on here would know the answer.  The question is: where
did the term ``bandwidth" come from when referring to one of the tuning
parameters in density estimation?  I suspect it came from time-series
analysis, but I'm not sure.  Does anyone know where the word was first
used in this context?
