(assuming it was an XDR save, that is ascii=F.)
My experience agrees with Thomas, and in any case I strongly urge you to
use rw1000, the Windows port of R-1.0.0. One reason for releasing a
non-beta version is to clear the decks, and we are not really able to
provide support for older beta versions. (I removed all pre-1.0.0 versions
from my Windows machine a few hours ago).
