About the issue of the efficiency of the Numerical Recipes, for instance:

Antoch, J. et al. (1998) Revisiting the pseudorandom number generator ran1
from the numerical recipes. Computational Statistics & Data Analysis
27:487-495.

These authors wrote:

"We show experimentally that the main problem is not in the implementation
of these generators but in "their definition"."


This seems more than a "distressing rumor".
