[R] Compilation help!

Help!
I'm running successfully R_0.64.1 under windows95 with bother and
thoroughly enjoying using it, but I would prefer to run under UNIX, I
downloaded the various files but I'm coming across the following
problem. Can anybody suggest anything to help me.
Executing
./configure --prefix=/myworkspace/R

leads me to

R is now configured for mips-sgo-irix6.4

   Source directory:		.
   Installation directory:	/myworkspace/R
   C compiler:			gcc -c -02
   FORTRAN compiler		f77
   Gnome support:		no

Fine up to here. When I tried make, I got the following error

UX:make: ERROR: make: file `Makefile' line 49: bad character & (octal
46)
*** Error code 1 (bu21)

But on reading line 49 of the Makefile, no '&' character is there.
The line is
	@(cd $(srcdir); \
	  for f in COPYING COPYRIGHTS MIRROR-SITES RESOURCES; do \
	    $(INSTALL_DATA) $${f} $(rhome); \     		   # LINE 49
	  done)

Any ideas?!
