Not at all, really. VNC is essentially a "windowing" system which allows
the sceen, mouse and keyboard of one physical machine to be mirrored on
another different physical machine, and little more than that. It is not
intrinsically symmetrical: the machine displayed is the "server" and
the machine displaying is the "viewer", and you start up different
VNC programs for server and viewer.

VNware, on the other hand, creates a virtual PC (or several) in software
within the single physical machine it is running on. Each such virtual PC
can boot up any operating system. So, as John wrote, you can have Linux,
W/95/98/NT etc., all running at the same time on the same physical PC.
The virtual PCs can all communicate with each other over a virtual
network internal to the physical PC as if they were on different physical
PCs on a real network. And so on. I suppose you could have VNC running on
all these virtual machines as well ...

So you could run S-plus in Windows and R in Linux simultaneously on one
PC, for instance. (In theory).

To people who are interested: to install it on Linux you will need a
recent version of Linux which is glibc (libc6) based. It won't work
on libc5 versions.
