[R] Building R under gnumake 3.75, Solaris 2.6

This is to report that I have now built R-0.63.3 successfully, using
exactly the same sequence of commands that I had run several times
previously.  In the meantime Nick Guoth from the local IT support ran
configure and gnumake from another machine, but in my directory, and
generated a different error.  I can only conclude that this somehow
had the side effect of fixing a relevant system setting.
