Yes, thats exactly it, $5000!  This is why several of us are 
using R right now , figuring the 5k is better put toward hardware.
In fact, they wanted some huge fee to _transfer_ a license from
a Sparc 20 to a U10, so we loaded R on that too. I can't help
but bash S+ for customer support like that ( I mean the license was
_paid_ for, we just wanted to decommision a machine and upgrade,
but couldn't take the license with us...go figure)

As for Brian's comment:  The rates they quoted me were "government"
rates, which are probably greatly inflated over academics  
(my email address is a little misleading...i'm actually at fws.gov)
