I don't agree. I want the record to be per-project. S has an audit
mechanism for each project, and .Rhistory is the nearest equivalent.
It is very helpful to be able to find out a year or more later what one
did on a particular project, possibly crucial.

I could point out that ESS inferior-R-mode does that whether you like
it or not. (There may be variable that turns it off, but I haven't
found it (nor looked for it).
