I beg to differ (if both of you are referring to readline 2.2):
Using SuSE 5.3 'straight out of the box', without any changes or additions,
I have compiled succesfully both R-0.62.3 and R-0.63.0 (using gcc and f2c).
And everything seems to work without problems.
Though SuSE 5.3 contains readline 2.1 (packaged together with bash!)
configure and make run without complaining.
The only problem I have with SuSE is with f2c and then ONLY with
Jim Lindsey's library 'repeated' (probably because it contains Fortran90?)
The RedHat 5.1 f2c compiles 'repeated' without any problems.
