I use TeX+Postscript so I have really no experience. But, I have
just tried to convert a ps figure (generated with R) to jpeg using
Ghostscript. I simple use
> gs -sDEVICE=jpeg -sOutputFile=col.jpeg col.ps
The result, at least in my case (a color image), seems quite beatiful.
