Unfortunately, that is not always an option. Many of us use R for
teaching and however much we hate Windoze, that is what the students
have and what is installed in the computer labs (mine are medical PhD
students, mind you, not an easy crowd to sway to Linux). 

What we really need is an integrated development tree, set up so that
we shouldn't have to send Robert on his periodic two-month porting
expeditions, but simply (cross-)compile for the Win32 target and go
testing and debugging. However, this is not entirely trivial to do.

I've been playing around some, but the Windows API is more than a
little forbidding to get into. Straight CLI ports can be done fairly
easily, for W95/NT at least.
