R-beta: S-Plus compatibility

Could you please expand a bit on this statement about imitating S wrt speed. I
am aware that R is substantially faster in looping and that I don't need to (and
can't) code "For" loops. Are you suggesting that there are other things which
will run much faster if they are coded in an non-S way?
