Isn't there an English proverb about "preaching to the prophet"? We
know... Essentially the same superlatives can be applied to the Debian
package system. Someone already did make some unofficial .rpm and
.dpkg files. However, it is probably best to hold back just a little
while longer before issuing an "official" set. There are some rather
substantial changes in directory layout and contributed-package
management coming up, and if a .rpm file with the old layout should
find its way onto the mass-produced CD's we'll find ourselves
answering questions about things that don't work with it forever...

Oh dear, I suppose we'd better get that HAVE_X11 conditionalization
code back in the source. It got "cleaned up" at some point because it
didn't work, but I suppose it had been better to make it work. I ran
into the same problem while trying to cross-compile a DOS version, and
I suspect there will also be people wanting a no-X11 version for
laptops and other cramped systems.

It's not all *that* hard to get it to compile by stripping out
X11-specific routines and calls. Basically, keep typing 'make' and
remove whatever gets in the way...
